As the gloomy ‘Wednesday,’ in the Addams family-inspired Netflix show of the same name and the peculiar ‘Astrid Deetz,’ in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Jenna Ortega has taken Hollywood by storm. Her most recent roles might’ve shot her into stardom, but everyone’s now far more preoccupied with her views on cancel culture than her most notable characters. That’s simply because of her most recent interview with Vanity Fair.

In the interview, Jenna sat down with Vanity Fair journalist Michelle Ruiz, spoke about her growing friendships with actress Winona Ryder and director Tim Burton, and dove into a conversation on political correctness and its pitfalls.

Describing Hollywood, the accomplished actress said, “The business that we work in is so touchy-feely. Everybody wants to be politically correct, but I feel like, in doing that, we lose a lot of our humanity and integrity because it lacks honesty.” She then continued by saying “I wish that we had a better sense of conversation. Imagine if everyone could say what they felt and not be judged for it and, if anything, it sparked some sort of debate, not an argument.

Jenna’s comments come a few months after her ‘Scream 7,’ co-star Melissa Barrera was cut from the Scream franchise following her posts on the Israel-Gaza conflict. The Scream production company, Spyglass Media Group, allegedly fired Melissa over the anti-semitic statements she made while discussing Israel’s involvement in the conflict on social media.

In one social media post, Melissa wrote, “Gaza is currently being treated like a concentration camp. Cornering everyone together, with nowhere to go, no electricity no water … People have learnt nothing from our histories. And just like our histories, people are still silently watching it all happen. THIS IS GENOCIDE & ETHNIC CLEANSING.” In another post, she shared a snippet from Jewish Currents magazine about warping history with a “Holocaust to boost the Israeli arms industry.”

In an Instagram story posted around the same time, she also criticised the Western media, claiming that they only show the Israeli side and suggesting they have a hidden agenda.

Spyglass Media Group responded to all of this with the following statement:

Spyglass’ stance is unequivocally clear: We have zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form, including false references to genocide, ethnic cleansing, Holocaust distortion or anything that flagrantly crosses the line into hate speech.”

Jenna, who has been vocal about the conflict herself, decided to leave the ‘Scream 7,’ cast the day after Melissa did. She claimed that she had encountered issues when scheduling her other projects and that was the reason why she had left.

After both left the production, long-time Scream star Neve Campbell was asked to return to the franchise to help with the new movie. Jenna and Melissa took on new acting ventures, with Jenna beginning her long-awaited movie ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,’ with friend Tim Burton.
