What’s The Deal With The “Demure,” Trend On TikTok?

I’m sure those of us who are working age have received a speech about workplace-appropriate clothing at least once in our lives. All-black attire, closed-toe non-slip shoes, and a well-kept professional look? We’ve heard of it. Whether we’ve worked in retail or catering, the push to keep up appearances remains the same. And it seems those of us on TikTok are finding the humorous side in this. 

A new TikTok trend about staying professional and “demure,” has emerged and become a source of comedy for internet users. The person who started the trend, a user called Joolie Annie, became a TikTok phenomenon and made the phrase “very demure, very mindful,” popular with a workplace-appropriate speech on her TikTok profile. 

The speech was uploaded to her account on the 8th of August as a tutorial on “How to be demure and modest and respectful at the workplace,” and quickly went viral.

 Beginning the speech, Jolie asks the rhetorical question “Do you see how I’ve done my makeup for work?” and then answers herself with the words “very demure, very mindful.” 

Her speech is all about being presentable and respectful while in the workplace, with natural makeup and a conservative style deemed as more appropriate than outgoing makeup and a revealing style.

In her own words, Annie says “I don’t come to work with a green cut crease. I don’t look like a clown when I go to work. I’m very mindful.” Her relatable words and hilarious delivery have resonated with internet users, prompting them to make their own videos about situations where they’ve been classy, demure, and mindful. 

Some famous faces have even hopped on the trend to show their classy sides. JLO is one of them as, in a TikTok video, she parodied Annie’s video by showing users how she drinks from a bottle in her classy way. In the video, she said “See how I do this? How I drink from the bottle? Very demure. Very mindful. I don’t just chug it.” 

Khloe Kardashian is another as she uploaded a TikTok video with her stylists Ash Holm and Dimitri Giannetos and showed her demure and mindful makeup, hair, and posture. Ash Holm began the video by saying “do you see how I did Khloe’s makeup? Very 90s, very sultry, very thoughtful, very demure.” Then Khloe followed by saying “do you see how I’m sitting here? Very ladylike, very mindful, very demure.” Dimitri finished with “do you see the bun? Very chic, very elegant, very demure.” The video ended with Dimitri asking what demure means and Ash and Khloe in fits of laughter. 

There have been plenty of others but there’s far too many to go over here. You’d be better off tweaking your TikTok algorithm by liking some of the videos and seeing all that the trend has to offer.
